Phulchowki Mountain (2,740m) is the highest point in the Kathmandu Valley and one of Nepal’s best one-day bird watching destinations. Rising from around 1,400m to 2,740m, the mountain’s changing habitats—from subtropical forest to temperate oak and rhododendron—support 400+ recorded bird species and a variety of mammals. From the top, enjoy spectacular views of the Himalayas, and on clear days you may even glimpse Mt. Everest.
After about a 1.5-hour drive to the upper slopes, we bird along the road as we ascend. Once at the top, we take time to enjoy the panoramic mountain and valley views, then begin a relaxed downhill birding walk through beautiful forest trails, with a picnic lunch en route. Expect excellent birding with laughingthrushes, babblers, flycatchers, sunbirds, tits, bulbuls, and warblers.
Key bird highlights may include:
Darjeeling Woodpecker, Scaly Thrush, Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush, White-throated Laughingthrush, Striated Laughingthrush, Hoary-throated Barwing, Kalij Pheasant, Spotted
Forktail,White-browed Fulvetta, Nepal Fulvetta, Himalayan Bluetail, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Green-tailed Sunbird, Sikkim Treecrepper, Black-throated Parrotbill, White-collared & Grey-winged Blackbirds, Long-tailed Minivet, White-tailed Nuthatch, Orange-bellied Leafbird, and many warblers.
Mammal possibilities:
Rhesus Macaque, Himalayan squirrel, Yellow-throated Marten, and occasional Indian Muntjac (Barking Deer).
Estimated birds for the day: around 80–100 species, depending on season and weather.
